Kwara government sues Saraki Over alleged defamatory remarks against Governor AbdulRazaq

The Kwara State Government has filed a criminal defamation suit against former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, accusing him of making false and damaging statements about Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The case, which is currently before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, marks the latest chapter in the escalating political and legal battle between the administration of Governor AbdulRazaq and the former Senate President, who remains one of the most influential political figures in the state.

According to court filings, the state government alleges that Saraki made and circulated statements through social media platforms and newspaper publications claiming that Governor AbdulRazaq did not attend or complete his secondary school education. The government contends that the remarks were false, injurious to the governor’s reputation and capable of causing public disaffection against him.

State authorities argue that the statements amount to criminal defamation under applicable laws and have therefore sought judicial intervention.

The suit is understood to be part of broader efforts by the state government to challenge what it describes as persistent misinformation and politically motivated attacks directed at the governor and his administration.

While details of the specific charges and reliefs sought by the prosecution were not immediately available, legal observers say the case could test the boundaries between freedom of expression and protection of personal reputation under Nigerian law.

The legal action comes against the backdrop of heightened political rivalry between supporters of Governor AbdulRazaq and Saraki, whose political influence has shaped Kwara politics for more than two decades.

Relations between both camps have deteriorated in recent months amid a series of public exchanges over governance, security and ongoing legal disputes. The two sides have repeatedly accused each other of engaging in political vendettas and misinformation campaigns.

Saraki has previously accused the Kwara State Government of using legal processes to target political opponents, while the government has maintained that its actions are guided strictly by the law and evidence available to prosecuting authorities.

As of the time of filing this report, Saraki had not issued an official statement specifically addressing the defamation suit. However, the former Senate President has consistently rejected allegations made against him in other recent legal matters, describing some of the actions initiated by the state government as politically motivated.

Political analysts say the case is likely to attract significant public attention given the stature of the parties involved and the implications it could have for the state’s political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.

With the matter now before the court, legal experts note that the prosecution will be required to establish that the statements complained of were false, defamatory and made with the requisite intent under the law, while the defence may rely on available legal protections, including truth, fair comment and constitutional guarantees of free speech.

The outcome of the case is expected to be closely watched both within Kwara State and across the country, as it adds to a growing list of high-profile political disputes finding their way into Nigeria’s courts.
