The Nigerian Law School has confirmed the death of Faith Alayande, a 23-year-old student, who fell from the rooftop of a hostel at its Lagos Campus in Victoria Island while participating in the institution’s externship programme.
In a statement issued Monday, the Law School’s Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho, said the incident occurred at about 4 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026. “Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00 am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the statement read.
Alayande was officially enrolled at the Nigerian Law School’s Enugu Campus but had been temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus hostel for the duration of her externship placement in the state.
According to accounts from the Lagos State Police Command and multiple hostel sources, the chain of events began at around 4:30 a.m. when a fellow student, who had recently completed her internship, noticed her roommate in distress and alerted hostel management. The Chief Matron of the Law School, Igbokwe Juliana, reported the matter to the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30 a.m., after which she went to the scene and found Alayande on the ground within the hostel compound.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said a fellow student and a relative had reportedly discovered a handwritten note believed to have been written by Alayande and began searching for her before she was found unresponsive following the fall. Investigators later recovered notes at the scene, according to reports.
Police operatives visited the hostel, evacuated the body to a morgue, and have opened an investigation into the circumstances of her death.
The Nigerian Law School said it is collaborating with relevant authorities and the deceased’s family to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. It expressed condolences to Alayande’s family, colleagues and others affected by her death, and appealed to the public and media to respect the family’s request for privacy as they grieve.
“The Management of the Nigerian Law School respectfully appeals to everyone to honour the family’s wishes and refrain from any actions that may further compound their grief,” the statement said. The institution reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, welfare and wellbeing of students and staff.
This is not the first reported death linked to suicide among Nigerian Law School students in recent months. In December 2025, a student at the school’s Yola Campus in Adamawa State, Ayomiposi Ojajuni, reportedly died by suicide after allegedly being barred from sitting for the Bar Final examinations.
The Law School has not officially disclosed the specific circumstances that led to Alayande’s death, and the police investigation remains ongoing.
