Liverpool brace for more defensive turmoil as Konate set to depart on a free transfer

Liverpool are facing a significant defensive overhaul this summer after France international Ibrahima Konate emerged as the latest high-profile player set to leave Anfield, according to multiple British media reports.

Konate, 27, is approaching the end of his existing contract, which expires on June 30, and his agents had been in discussions with Liverpool’s leadership over an extension for several months.

The news comes as a blow to manager Arne Slot, who is already navigating a turbulent summer of departures. Konate will join fellow Liverpool stalwarts Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson in leaving the club this summer.

The timing is especially surprising given the defender’s own recent assurances. Speaking after Liverpool’s Merseyside derby win, Konate said: “There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement. I think everyone wished for that as soon as possible but we are in a good way.” He had also stated: “For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season.”

Konate joined Liverpool from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in 2021 for around £36 million and went on to spend five trophy laden years at Anfield, establishing himself as one of the club’s key defensive figures alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds defender played 51 games across all competitions this season and is now expected to use the upcoming FIFA World Cup to attract potential suitors.

Liverpool appear to have begun planning for life without the Frenchman. The club has already secured a new centre back for the 2026–27 campaign by signing Jeremy Jacquet from French side Rennes, and will also have Giovanni Leoni available after his injury hit debut season limited him to just a single appearance.

The sudden decision not to tie Konate down to a new deal complicates Liverpool’s summer rebuild further, particularly with Virgil van Dijk himself heading into the final 12 months of his contract. Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has been linked with a move to Merseyside as Liverpool look to bolster their backline.

Neither Liverpool nor Konate’s representatives have issued an official statement at the time of publication.
