Military welfare boost as soldiers’ minimum pay hits N100,000

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence has announced that the minimum monthly salary for members of the country’s Armed Forces has been increased to #100,000, describing the move as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare and morale of military personnel.

The minister disclosed that the salary adjustment followed a recent review of welfare packages for soldiers, aimed at enhancing their motivation as they continue to confront security challenges across the country.

According to the minister, the new minimum pay reflects the government’s commitment to supporting troops who are engaged in counter-insurgency operations, anti-banditry campaigns, and other internal security missions in various parts of Nigeria.

He noted that improving the welfare of military personnel remains a priority for the administration, stressing that better remuneration, alongside improved working conditions and access to modern equipment, would boost the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces.

The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen military capacity through the procurement of advanced platforms, weapons, and other operational assets. He said these investments are intended to ensure that troops are adequately equipped to tackle emerging security threats.

Beyond salary improvements, the government has continued to implement measures aimed at enhancing the overall well-being of service personnel, including housing initiatives, healthcare support, insurance schemes, and educational opportunities for military families.

The announcement comes amid sustained military operations against insurgents in the North-East, armed bandits in the North-West, oil thieves in the Niger Delta, and other criminal groups operating across the country. Security experts have repeatedly argued that improved welfare is essential for maintaining troop morale and strengthening the military’s ability to respond effectively to these challenges.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of soldiers, assuring Nigerians that additional reforms would be introduced to improve the conditions of service for personnel of the Armed Forces.

The salary increase is expected to be welcomed by military personnel and stakeholders who have long advocated better remuneration and welfare packages for soldiers serving on the frontlines of Nigeria’s security operations.
