The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has thrown open applications for the fourth edition of its Hackathon Live Show, urging young innovators to design affordable and scalable technology solutions that widen digital access for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and other underserved groups.
The competition, themed “Technology Without Barriers,” invites young creators to solve real-world accessibility issues, showcase their concepts on a national platform, and pitch directly before industry regulators, investors, and ecosystem partners.
According to the Commission, entries should target specific accessibility gaps in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. Selected focus areas include AI speech-to-text solutions optimized for low-bandwidth environments, voice-enabled complaint and feedback systems for telecom consumers, AI-powered sign language recognition platforms, image-to-voice navigation tools, accessible USSD protocols, and inclusive job-matching and customer care platforms.
Beyond PWDs, the initiative is also designed to help other underserved communities in accessing digital services
To be eligible, applicants must be young Nigerians aged 18–35 residing in the Federal Capital Territory. The Commission has explicitly emphasised that PWD-inclusive teams and individual applicants are strongly urged to participate.
Applicants do not need a finished product to apply. The NCC said innovative concepts still at the idea stage are also welcome.
Applicants must submit a brief description of their proposed solution, of no more than 500 words, detailing the problem being addressed, team composition, expected impact, and an optional prototype or demo link. Submissions should be sent electronically to indigenousconent@ncc.gov.ng, with the subject line “Application for NCC Hackathon Live Show 4th Edition – Technology Without Barriers.”
The original deadline has since been pushed back. In a notice on its official social media account, the NCC confirmed: applicants now have until Monday, 17th August 2026 to submit for the NCC Hackathon 4th Edition.
The competition offers more than bragging rights. Selected participants will get the chance to participate in a high-impact national innovation challenge, receive mentorship from industry experts, accessibility advocates and technology professionals, and showcase their solutions before regulators, industry stakeholders, investors and innovation partners.
Winners stand to gain recognition, opportunities for pilot deployment, further development support, and possible nomination to national and international innovation platforms. Cash prizes will also be awarded to support product scaling and commercialisation, alongside opportunities for policy input, as selected innovators will contribute directly to regulatory policy discussions regarding digital inclusion in Nigeria.
The hackathon builds on years of NCC engagement with disability inclusion in telecoms. The Commission is empowered under the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 to ensure the needs of disabled and elderly persons are factored into the provision of communications services, and has previously rolled out assistive-technology projects at dozens of locations nationwide to support Nigerians living with disabilities, a population the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities estimates at over 35 million people.
With “Technology Without Barriers,” the NCC is signalling that it wants the next wave of accessibility tools to come not just from government programmes, but from Nigeria’s own pool of young tech talent.
