The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo at the age of 40.
Reports emerging on Tuesday indicated that the actor died in Lagos after an illness believed to have been privately managed for several months. News of his passing triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans, filmmakers, and public figures across Nigeria and beyond.
According to multiple entertainment reports, Ekubo had reportedly been battling stage four liver cancer since 2024 and had undergone extensive treatment, including a liver transplant, before his condition worsened in recent months.
The actor’s prolonged absence from social media and public appearances had sparked speculation among fans over the past year. His last known Instagram activity dated back to late 2024, leading many followers to question his sudden withdrawal from the entertainment scene.
Several Nollywood stars took to social media to express shock and grief over the development. Actress Funke Akindele described the late actor as a dear friend whose memory would remain unforgettable, while comedian Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, said Ekubo remained positive and cheerful despite his health struggles.
Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo and actress Kate Henshaw also joined the growing list of entertainers mourning the actor, describing his death as a painful loss to Nollywood.
Born on April 10, 1986, in Abia State, Ekubo rose to national prominence after emerging first runner-up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria competition. He later established himself as one of Nollywood’s recognizable leading actors, appearing in numerous romantic dramas, comedy films, and television productions.
Throughout his career, he featured in several notable productions including Weekend Getaway, The First Lady, Power of 1, Zero Hour, and Omo Ghetto: The Saga. His performances earned him multiple nominations and awards within the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Industry colleagues described him as charismatic, professional, and deeply supportive of younger actors navigating the competitive film industry.
While official burial arrangements are yet to be announced by the family, reports indicate that Nollywood guilds and close associates are already planning candlelight tributes and memorial events in his honour.
Ekubo’s death has also reignited conversations online about healthcare awareness, routine medical screening, and the pressures public figures face while battling serious illnesses privately. Across social media, fans continue to share scenes from his movies and interviews, celebrating a career that spanned more than two decades in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
