Security agencies have intensified preparations ahead of the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election, deploying thousands of personnel and strengthening inter-agency coordination to ensure a peaceful, free and credible poll amid heightened political tensions.
The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, has announced the deployment of conventional police officers, intelligence operatives, Rapid Response Teams and tactical units across the state to safeguard voters, election officials and electoral materials before, during and after the election. A Joint Security Command Centre has also been established to coordinate security operations and facilitate rapid responses to any threats.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had earlier visited Osun State for strategic meetings with Governor Ademola Adeleke, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), traditional rulers, political parties and other stakeholders as part of efforts to curb political violence and reinforce security arrangements ahead of the off-cycle governorship poll.
Police authorities have also warned against the spread of fake news, misinformation and other actions capable of undermining public confidence in the electoral process. They urged political actors, supporters and residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful election.
The heightened security measures follow months of political tension in the state, with reports of isolated incidents of violence and allegations exchanged among political parties ahead of the election. Security agencies have assured residents that anyone found attempting to disrupt the electoral process will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, INEC has continued preparations for the governorship election, including the recruitment and training of ad hoc staff and engagement with stakeholders to enhance the credibility of the exercise. The commission has also expressed concern over vote-buying and urged voters, political parties and civil society groups to support efforts to ensure a transparent and credible election.
The Osun governorship election is expected to be keenly contested and is being closely watched as one of Nigeria’s major off-cycle elections, with security agencies maintaining that adequate measures are in place to guarantee the safety of voters and the integrity of the electoral process.
