Police officer killed, others injured as wrong-way truck rams bullion van escort on Abeokuta expressway

A mobile police officer was killed and three others sustained injuries after a cement-mixing truck driving against traffic collided with a police escort convoy on the Sagamu–Siun–Kabape–Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State, authorities have confirmed.

The fatal crash occurred at the Iyana Obafe axis of the expressway, involving a bullion van belonging to Bemil Security, two Toyota Hilux escort vehicles, and a silo truck bearing registration number KRD 945 YL.

The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the incident in a statement in Abeokuta, said the crash occurred on Saturday inbound Siun, around the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate along the highway, and that four persons were in the vehicles at the time of the crash.

According to a police source, the bullion van narrowly escaped the full impact of the collision, as the escort vehicle bore the brunt of the crash. One mobile police officer was burnt beyond recognition, while two others sustained injuries. The escort van was engulfed in flames, and the officer’s rifle and other equipment were reportedly destroyed in the inferno.

Akinbiyi stated that the cause of the crash was the truck driver, who drove against the flow of traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with one of the escort vans. Three persons sustained injuries, while one officer was burnt alive in the accident.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to road safety concerns on federal highways in Ogun State, particularly the dangers posed by motorists who flout one-way traffic regulations on major expressways.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the truck driver was arrested or if a formal investigation has been launched. TRACE and the Nigeria Police Force have been contacted for further comment.

The deceased officer’s name had not been officially released at the this of publication.
