Researchers have found that the human clitoris contains more than 10,000 nerve fibers, challenging the long-standing figure of about 8,000 that has frequently appeared in medical and educational materials.
The research, led by surgeon and scientist Blair Peters of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), represents the first known direct count of nerve fibers in human clitoral tissue. The findings were initially presented in 2022 and were subsequently published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine in 2023.
For the study, researchers obtained samples of dorsal clitoral nerve tissue from seven adult transmasculine volunteers undergoing gender-affirming genital surgery.
The tissue samples were prepared and examined under a microscope at 1,000-times magnification. Researchers used image-analysis software to count individual nerve fibers, also known as axons.
Five of the seven collected samples contained sufficient nerve tissue for analysis. Researchers counted an average of 5,140 nerve fibers in the sampled dorsal nerve on one side of the clitoris.
Because the dorsal nerves are anatomically symmetrical, the researchers doubled the figure to estimate approximately 10,281 myelinated nerve fibers supplying the human glans clitoris.
Importantly, the researchers said the actual total number of nerve fibers is likely higher because the calculation did not include all smaller unmyelinated nerve fibers or other contributions to clitoral innervation.
The study also revisits a widely repeated claim that the clitoris contains approximately 8,000 nerve endings.
According to OHSU, the figure appears to have been derived from research involving livestock rather than from a direct count of human clitoral nerve tissue. The new study therefore provides a human-based measurement rather than relying on an estimate from another species.

The researchers noted that the concentration of nerve fibers is particularly striking given the relatively small size of the clitoris.
For comparison, OHSU said the median nerve, which extends through the wrist and hand and is associated with conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, contains about 18,000 nerve fibers despite serving a much larger anatomical area.
Beyond correcting anatomical assumptions, the researchers said the findings could have practical implications for surgical care.
A better understanding of the location and density of clitoral nerves could help surgeons preserve or restore sensation during procedures involving the genital region, including gender-affirming surgery and reconstructive procedures following injury.
Peters has specifically studied the anatomy to improve nerve selection and reconstruction during phalloplasty, a procedure used to construct a penis for some transmasculine patients. The researchers also said the findings could contribute to efforts to reduce accidental nerve damage during procedures such as labiaplasty.
The findings were initially presented at a joint scientific meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the International Society for Sexual Medicine in October 2022.
A detailed version of the research, titled “How many nerve fibers innervate the human glans clitoris: a histomorphometric evaluation of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris,” was later published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine in February 2023.
Researchers said the work also highlights a broader gap in anatomical research, noting that the vulva and its role in sexual sensation have historically received less scientific attention than other parts of human anatomy.
The study does not mean that each nerve fiber represents a separate “nerve ending”; rather, it measures axons within the dorsal clitoral nerves. The distinction is important because the commonly repeated “8,000 nerve endings” figure and the new study’s “10,281 nerve fibers” are not precisely equivalent measurements.
