Switzerland secured first place in Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on Wednesday, while Canada advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.
The Swiss side sealed top spot in the group after second-half goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi gave them a two-goal advantage. Canada responded through Promise David, who scored in the 76th minute after coming off the bench, but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser despite late pressure.
After a goalless first half, Switzerland took the lead less than a minute after the restart when Vargas finished off a well-worked attacking move. Manzambi doubled the advantage midway through the second half, capitalising on a defensive error to put the Europeans firmly in control. Canada improved after a series of substitutions and pulled one back through David, but Switzerland held on for all three points.
The result ensured Switzerland finished atop Group B and progressed to the Round of 32 as group winners. Canada, despite the defeat, advanced as runners-up, marking the country’s first-ever qualification for the knockout phase of a FIFA World Cup.
Canada entered the tournament seeking to surpass its previous World Cup performances. Before the 2026 edition, the North American nation had never progressed beyond the group stage, having exited in both its 1986 and 2022 appearances.
The achievement represents a significant milestone for Canadian football and comes on home soil, with the country serving as one of the co-hosts of the expanded 48-team tournament alongside the United States and Mexico.
Switzerland, meanwhile, continued its strong World Cup tradition by advancing to the knockout rounds once again. The Swiss entered the tournament as the highest-ranked team in Group B and lived up to expectations by finishing top of the standings.
With the group stage now complete, both teams will turn their attention to the Round of 32, where Switzerland will enjoy the advantages that come with winning the group, while Canada prepares for the biggest knockout match in its World Cup history.
