President Bola Tinubu has called on state governors to halt the construction of unnecessary flyovers and instead channel increased federal allocations into expanding road networks that improve connectivity, enhance security access and stimulate economic development.
The President made the appeal while addressing state governors, stressing that resources should be directed toward projects with broader socio-economic impact rather than expensive infrastructure that may not address the most pressing transportation needs.
Tinubu said the improved revenues accruing to states following his administration’s fiscal reforms should be invested in infrastructure capable of delivering tangible benefits to citizens, particularly through the construction and rehabilitation of roads that connect rural and urban communities.
According to him, a more extensive road network would not only ease transportation but also improve access for security agencies responding to emergencies and tackling insecurity across the country.
The President noted that while flyovers may be necessary in locations experiencing severe traffic congestion, they should not become routine projects where alternative road improvements would provide greater value for money.
He urged governors to carefully assess their infrastructure priorities and ensure public funds are committed to projects that directly improve mobility, economic activities and public safety.
Tinubu also emphasised the need for prudent management of public resources, urging state governments to maximise the opportunities created by higher federal allocations to deliver critical infrastructure and improve the living standards of Nigerians.
The President’s remarks come amid increased revenue allocations to states following the removal of petrol subsidies and ongoing fiscal reforms introduced by the Federal Government. Several state governments have since embarked on major infrastructure projects, including road construction, bridges and flyovers, with varying justifications based on local transportation needs.
Tinubu maintained that investments in comprehensive road networks would have a wider developmental impact by opening up communities, facilitating commerce and enabling faster deployment of security personnel when required.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with state governments to strengthen infrastructure, improve connectivity and support initiatives that promote sustainable economic growth across the country.
