The United States Department of State has committed $3.5 million to support efforts aimed at improving the documentation, monitoring and reporting of religiously motivated violence in Nigeria, as part of broader initiatives to promote accountability and protect freedom of religion.
The funding, announced through the U.S. State Department’s Office of International Religious Freedom, will support projects designed to enhance the collection of credible data on incidents of religious violence and persecution across the country.
According to U.S. officials, the programme seeks to strengthen local capacity for documenting abuses, improve reporting mechanisms, and provide evidence that can be used by policymakers, advocacy groups and human rights organisations to address violations and promote accountability.
The initiative comes amid persistent concerns over violence affecting communities in parts of Nigeria, particularly in regions where clashes involving armed groups, banditry, insurgency and communal conflicts have resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. While many of these conflicts are rooted in a complex mix of security, ethnic, economic and environmental factors, religious identity is often cited as a contributing element in some attacks.
The U.S. government said improved documentation would help ensure that incidents are accurately recorded and analysed, enabling more effective responses from authorities and international partners. The project is also expected to support civil society organisations working on religious freedom, conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
