Veteran Nigerian musician Daddy Showkey has reflected on his 50-year journey in the entertainment industry, describing the path to success as one filled with immense hardship and sacrifices that he “wouldn’t wish on my enemy.”
The Galala music pioneer made the remarks as he marked his 56th birthday and celebrated five decades on stage with a series of events, including a concert in Ajegunle and a grand finale at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos.
Speaking about his career, the singer, whose real name is John Odafe Asiemo, said his rise from the streets of Ajegunle to becoming one of Nigeria’s most influential entertainers was marked by numerous challenges that tested his resilience.
“The experience is one I won’t wish on my enemy,” Daddy Showkey said, while reflecting on the struggles behind his success.
The veteran entertainer noted that despite the difficulties, he remains grateful for the opportunity to inspire generations of musicians and fans through his music.
Daddy Showkey rose to prominence in the 1990s with his signature Galala sound and dance style, becoming one of the leading voices of Nigeria’s street music culture. Over the years, he has released several hit songs, including Fire Fire, Diana, The Name, Ghetto Soldier and Jehovah.
Announcing the milestone celebration earlier, the singer said the week-long event was intended to celebrate his journey and appreciate supporters who have stood by him throughout his career.
The celebrations featured a concert in his hometown of Ajegunle on August 8, followed by a grand anniversary event at Eko Hotels and Suites on August 9.
Daddy Showkey’s career has been defined not only by commercial success but also by personal resilience. Over the years, he has spoken publicly about surviving poverty, gang-related violence, life-threatening attacks and a serious accident that temporarily interrupted his music career.
