The 2026 World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos has officially begun, bringing elite international players to Nigeria’s commercial capital for a six-day tournament at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall inside Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
The competition, which started on Tuesday, May 19, features top-ranked table tennis players from more than 20 countries competing for a $100,000 prize pool and 400 ITTF World Ranking points.
Lagos remains one of only 10 global cities selected for the WTT Contender series and is one of just two African hosts, alongside Tunis, Tunisia.
Organisers say this year’s edition features a strong field, with at least 30 players ranked among the world’s top 100 arriving in Lagos following recent appearances at the World Team Table Tennis Championships in London.
The tournament comprises five events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
According to Local Organising Committee Chairman Adesoji Tayo, the Lagos leg continues to grow in stature, attracting some of the sport’s biggest names and rising talents.
In the men’s singles draw, defending champion Anders Lind of Denmark faces stiff competition from former champion Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany, Japan’s Shunsuke Togami, and France’s Thibault Poret, among others.
Nigeria’s own Olajide Omotayo is also in the main draw, with home fans hoping he can leverage local support to make a deep run in the tournament.
In the women’s singles category, defending champion Honoka Hashimoto of Japan returns to Lagos to defend her title, facing strong challenges from compatriot Satsuki Odo and South Korea’s Joo Cheonhui.
Tournament Director Kweku Tandoh described the event as the result of over a decade of sustained development in Nigerian table tennis, noting its evolution from a local championship to a world-ranked international competition.
The tournament schedule began with qualifying matches on May 19 and 20, while the main draw is set to commence on Thursday, May 21, as players battle for spots in the final stages of the competition.
