Xenophobia returnees receive financial aid from Imo govt, MTN

Nigerians recently evacuated from South Africa following reported xenophobic attacks have received financial and material support from the Imo State Government, alongside cash assistance from telecommunications company MTN Nigeria and other partners.

The beneficiaries were part of a group of returnees repatriated to Nigeria amid rising concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in some parts of South Africa, where sporadic incidents of violence targeting migrant communities have previously been reported.

At a reception ceremony held in Imo State, officials announced a support package that includes ₦1 million for each returnee from the state government, ₦100,000 cash assistance from MTN Nigeria, and additional relief items aimed at helping them reintegrate into society.

State officials said the intervention was designed to cushion the immediate economic hardship faced by the returnees and support their transition back into local communities. They also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to assisting citizens affected by crises abroad.

The returnees expressed appreciation for the support, noting that the assistance would help them rebuild their lives after their abrupt return from South Africa.

While the federal government continues coordination on broader evacuation and reintegration efforts, state-level interventions such as this are increasingly being used to provide immediate relief to affected citizens.

Authorities have also called for continued collaboration between government agencies and private sector partners to ensure sustainable support systems for Nigerians returning from crisis-affected regions abroad.
