268 Nigerian returnees arrive in Lagos from South Africa amid xenophobic concerns

A total of 268 Nigerian nationals have returned to the country from South Africa following reported xenophobic attacks and related tensions, with the first batch of evacuees arriving at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The returnees were received by officials of relevant government agencies and emergency response teams, who provided initial medical checks, documentation support, and temporary assistance upon arrival. Authorities say additional evacuation flights are expected as part of ongoing efforts to bring affected Nigerians back home safely.

The evacuation comes amid renewed concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in some parts of South Africa, where sporadic outbreaks of violence and unrest have previously been linked to xenophobic sentiments targeting migrant communities, including Nigerians.

Government officials have reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and coordinating with South African authorities and international partners to ensure the safety and dignity of returnees.

Many of those who arrived described difficult experiences abroad, with some reporting loss of property and disrupted livelihoods as a result of the unrest. However, officials have urged calm while support arrangements are being put in place for reintegration.

The Federal Government is expected to continue monitoring the situation and facilitate further evacuation flights where necessary as diplomatic discussions progress between both countries.
