The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has disclosed that 442 Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators remain active across Lagos State, while 27 waste collection routes are currently undergoing review as part of ongoing efforts to improve waste management services and operational efficiency.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the route review forms part of a broader restructuring initiative aimed at aligning waste collection capacity with the growing demands of the state’s rapidly expanding population and urban development.
According to the agency, the review is intended to ensure that residents receive more efficient and reliable waste collection services, particularly in areas experiencing increased population growth and waste generation. LAWMA has been assessing the performance of PSP operators and making necessary adjustments to strengthen service delivery across various communities.
The development follows a comprehensive operational review by the authority, which recently led to the withdrawal of licences from several underperforming PSP operators and the realignment of waste collection routes in selected parts of the state. LAWMA said the measures were necessary to maintain environmental standards and safeguard public health.
Gbadegesin explained that while most PSP operators continue to meet service expectations, the authority remains committed to continuously monitoring performance and restructuring operations where necessary. He noted that route reviews are particularly important in locations where rapid development has outpaced the capacity of existing operators, making it necessary to redistribute responsibilities and introduce additional operators where required.
The LAWMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening the PSP framework, enhancing accountability among operators, and ensuring that waste management services keep pace with Lagos State’s urban growth. He also urged residents to continue patronising only accredited PSP operators and to comply with waste disposal regulations.
The PSP scheme remains a critical component of Lagos State’s waste management strategy, with private operators responsible for collecting and transporting household waste within designated routes under LAWMA’s supervision. The ongoing review is expected to further improve service coverage and environmental sanitation across the state.
