22 killed as gunmen attack Plateau community, hospital

At least 22 people, including a medical doctor, a church minister, and five hospital patients, were killed when suspected armed attackers invaded Kawel community in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The late-night attack reportedly began around 11:40 p.m. on Sunday when the assailants stormed the farming community, shooting residents and attacking homes. Witnesses said the gunmen operated for nearly two hours before retreating following a confrontation with security personnel.

Residents alleged that the attackers moved through different parts of the community, calling out the names of some victims before opening fire. The violence later spread to a local hospital, where the gunmen reportedly killed a doctor and five patients receiving treatment.

Among those killed was Reverend Markus Nyam of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), who was reportedly shot outside his residence during the attack.

Community leaders said distress calls were made to security agencies shortly after the assault began. While the Plateau State Police Command said officers responded to the incident and engaged the attackers in a gun battle, residents expressed concerns over what they described as a delayed security response.

The spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, confirmed that security operatives confronted the attackers and forced them to flee into nearby bushes. Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest those responsible for the killings.

The attack has triggered fresh concerns over insecurity in Plateau State, particularly in Bokkos and other rural communities that have experienced repeated violent attacks in recent years.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the killings and directed emergency response agencies to provide assistance to affected families and survivors. He also ordered security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and prevent further attacks in the area.

Local leaders said hundreds of residents fled their homes during the assault, with many seeking refuge in nearby communities and forests. Authorities are currently assessing the humanitarian impact of the attack while security forces continue operations in the area.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns about recurring violence in Plateau State, where attacks on rural communities have continued to claim lives and displace residents despite ongoing security interventions.
