The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day across the state in commemoration of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The declaration was made as part of activities marking the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year, a significant occasion for Muslims worldwide. The state government said the holiday would provide an opportunity for residents, particularly the Muslim faithful, to celebrate the occasion and reflect on the values of peace, unity, tolerance, and spiritual renewal.
In a statement issued by the state government, Governor Seyi Makinde congratulated Muslims in Oyo State and across Nigeria on witnessing the commencement of the new Islamic year. He urged citizens to use the period to pray for the continued peace, stability, and progress of the state and the country at large.
The governor emphasized the importance of the Hijrah celebration, which commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, an event regarded as a defining moment in Islamic history. According to him, the occasion serves as a reminder of the virtues of sacrifice, perseverance, faith, and commitment to the common good.
Makinde called on residents to embrace the spirit of coexistence and mutual respect regardless of religious or ethnic differences. He noted that Oyo State’s growth and development depend largely on the collective efforts of its people and their commitment to peaceful living.
“The Hijrah celebration offers another opportunity for reflection and renewed dedication to values that promote harmony, justice, and societal progress. We encourage all residents to continue supporting initiatives aimed at fostering peace and development across the state,” the statement said.
The government also urged citizens to conduct themselves peacefully during the celebrations and to remain law-abiding while participating in religious and community activities associated with the Islamic New Year.
Public institutions, government offices, and state-owned establishments are expected to observe the work-free day, while essential service providers will continue operations as necessary.
Religious leaders and community stakeholders have welcomed the declaration, describing it as a recognition of the significance of the Islamic calendar and an opportunity for spiritual reflection among the faithful.
The Hijrah New Year is observed annually by Muslims around the world and marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is often characterized by prayers, sermons, and reflections on personal growth, communal responsibility, and devotion to God.
As residents prepare to observe the holiday, the Oyo State Government reiterated its commitment to promoting religious harmony and ensuring an inclusive environment where people of all faiths can practice their beliefs freely and peacefully.
The work-free day is expected to allow thousands of Muslims across the state to participate fully in religious activities while joining other residents in reflecting on the values of peace, unity, and shared prosperity that the occasion represents.
