2027: Kwara PDP unveils Reverend Cornelius Fawenu as deputy governorship candidate

The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced Reverend Cornelius Fawenu as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 governorship election, completing the party’s ticket ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested poll.

Fawenu will run alongside the PDP’s governorship candidate, Bolakale Kawu, in the party’s bid to reclaim power in Kwara State from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made by the party leadership, which described the Kawu-Fawenu ticket as a balanced combination of experience, competence, and grassroots appeal. According to the PDP, the pairing reflects its commitment to presenting a credible and inclusive leadership team capable of addressing the state’s developmental challenges.

Party officials said Fawenu’s emergence followed extensive consultations with stakeholders across the state and was influenced by his record of leadership, integrity, and service. They expressed confidence that his background as a cleric and community leader would strengthen the party’s campaign and broaden its support base ahead of the election.

Speaking on the development, PDP leaders noted that the selection of a deputy governorship candidate is a critical step in the party’s preparations for the 2027 general election. They maintained that the ticket is designed to unite the diverse interests within the party while appealing to voters across Kwara’s three senatorial districts.

The party further stated that the Kawu-Fawenu ticket represents a vision of inclusive governance focused on economic growth, improved education, quality healthcare, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and job creation.

Supporters of the PDP have welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that the combination of Kawu and Fawenu would provide a formidable challenge in the race for the Kwara State Government House.

Political observers believe the unveiling of the deputy governorship candidate signals the beginning of intensified political activities in the state, as parties continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. Although the election remains some time away, the announcement is expected to shape political alignments and spark renewed engagement among party supporters and stakeholders.

The PDP has called on its members to remain united and committed to the party’s objectives, urging supporters across the state to mobilise at the grassroots level in preparation for the campaign season.

With its governorship ticket now complete, the opposition party says it is focused on building momentum, expanding its support base, and presenting what it describes as a credible alternative for the people of Kwara State in the 2027 governorship election.
