Residents of parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) experienced another earth tremor, prompting the Federal Government to reassure the public that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
The latest tremor, which was felt in parts of Mpape and neighbouring communities in Abuja, caused panic among residents, with many reporting brief ground vibrations and low rumbling sounds similar to previous incidents recorded in the area. Authorities said investigations are underway to determine the precise cause of the seismic activity.
Reacting to the development, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that relevant government agencies and experts are monitoring the situation.
According to the minister, preliminary assessments indicate there is no evidence of a major earthquake risk, while geologists and other technical experts have been deployed to evaluate the tremors and recommend appropriate measures where necessary.
Alake said the government would continue to provide timely updates as investigations progress, urging residents to rely only on verified information and avoid spreading rumours capable of causing unnecessary panic.
Earth tremors have been recorded intermittently in parts of Abuja over the years, particularly around the Mpape axis, an area known for extensive quarrying and mining activities. Previous investigations by relevant authorities and geologists have suggested that some of the tremors could be linked to seismic movements or quarry blasting, although each incident requires independent scientific assessment.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that agencies responsible for geological surveys, mining regulation and emergency management are working together to assess the latest incident.
Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, report any unusual developments to the appropriate authorities and cooperate with emergency officials while technical assessments continue.
