The Anambra State Government has commenced a statewide free hypertension screening programme aimed at improving early detection and management of high blood pressure among residents.

The initiative, which is being implemented across public health facilities in the state, forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases.

Health officials said the programme is designed to encourage residents to regularly monitor their blood pressure and seek timely medical attention where necessary. The free screenings are available at government-owned hospitals, primary healthcare centres, and other designated public health facilities throughout the state.

According to the state government, hypertension remains one of the leading risk factors for heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and other serious health conditions. Many individuals living with the condition are unaware of their status because hypertension often develops without noticeable symptoms.

The screening campaign seeks to identify individuals with elevated blood pressure levels and connect them with appropriate medical care and lifestyle counselling. Health workers involved in the programme are also expected to provide education on healthy living practices, including proper nutrition, regular exercise, and routine health checks.

State authorities urged residents, particularly adults and individuals with a family history of hypertension, to take advantage of the free service and know their blood pressure status.

Public health experts have consistently emphasized the importance of regular screening as a critical step in preventing complications associated with hypertension. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and improve long-term health outcomes.

The programme aligns with ongoing efforts by governments and health agencies across Nigeria to address the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases and improve access to preventive healthcare services.
