Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has expressed concern over the safety of popular Nigerian comedian Sarkin Dariya, calling on security agencies to take immediate steps to protect him following reports of alleged threats.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Adeyanju warned that the authorities should be held accountable if any harm befalls the comedian, whom he said has allegedly been subjected to intimidation over his content.
“Hold the authorities responsible if anything happens to Sarkin Dariya,” Adeyanju stated, urging relevant law enforcement agencies to investigate the reported threats and ensure the entertainer’s safety.
According to the lawyer, the alleged threats against Sarkin Dariya raise concerns about freedom of expression and the safety of content creators who use satire and comedy to comment on social and political issues.
Adeyanju argued that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to express opinions within the bounds of the law without fear of harassment or intimidation.
He called on security agencies to act swiftly by investigating the source of the alleged threats and taking appropriate measures to prevent any breach of the comedian’s rights or personal safety.
The statement has generated widespread reactions on social media, with supporters of the comedian and free speech advocates urging authorities to address the situation promptly.
Many users expressed concern over the increasing reports of harassment involving public commentators and entertainers, while others appealed for calm and called for a thorough investigation into the allegations before conclusions are drawn.
Some commentators also stressed the importance of protecting creative expression, noting that comedians often use humour as a means of engaging with public issues.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor any other relevant security agency had publicly responded to Adeyanju’s statement or confirmed receiving any formal complaint regarding the alleged threats.
Similarly, details surrounding the nature of the reported threats and those allegedly responsible had not been officially disclosed.
Legal analysts say allegations of threats or intimidation should be promptly investigated to establish the facts and, where necessary, provide protection for individuals who may be at risk.
They also emphasised that while freedom of expression is guaranteed under Nigeria’s Constitution, disputes arising from public commentary should be resolved through lawful means rather than threats or intimidation.
The development has once again drawn attention to concerns about the safety of public figures and content creators, with observers urging authorities to uphold the rule of law by ensuring that all allegations are impartially investigated and that the rights of every citizen are protected.
