Delta gov’s aide slams Omoni Oboli over release of Alex Ekubo tribute film

A senior aide to the Delta State Governor has criticized Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli over the release of a tribute movie featuring late actor Alex Ekubo shortly after his burial, describing the move as insensitive and an attempt to profit from the actor’s death.

The controversy erupted following the release of the film, which was promoted as a tribute to the late actor and highlighted some of his final works before his passing. While many fans welcomed the production as a celebration of Ekubo’s legacy, others questioned the timing of its release.

Reacting to the development, the governor’s aide accused Oboli of rushing the project to capitalize on public emotions surrounding the actor’s death. He argued that releasing the film so soon after Ekubo’s burial raised ethical concerns and risked overshadowing the period of mourning by family, friends, and colleagues.

According to him, tributes should primarily focus on honoring the memory of the deceased rather than generating commercial gains. He maintained that a more appropriate interval between the actor’s burial and the film’s release would have demonstrated greater sensitivity to those grieving the loss.

The comments quickly sparked widespread reactions across social media platforms, with opinions divided among fans and industry stakeholders.

Supporters of Oboli defended the filmmaker, arguing that tribute projects are common in the entertainment industry and often serve as a means of preserving the legacy of deceased artists. They contended that the film provided an opportunity for audiences to celebrate Ekubo’s contributions to Nollywood and remember his impact on the industry.

Others, however, echoed the concerns raised by the governor’s aide, insisting that the timing of the release was inappropriate and could be interpreted as exploiting public sympathy.

Neither Oboli nor her management team immediately issued an official response to the criticism. However, industry observers noted that the actress has long been recognized for producing films that celebrate the achievements and stories of notable figures within the entertainment sector.

Alex Ekubo, who was widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most recognizable actors, built a successful career spanning more than a decade. Known for his roles in numerous blockbuster films and television productions, he earned admiration for his talent, charisma, and contributions to the growth of the Nigerian film industry.

Since news of his death emerged, tributes have continued to pour in from fellow actors, filmmakers, fans, and public figures across the country, all paying homage to his legacy and achievements.

The debate surrounding the tribute movie highlights broader discussions within the entertainment industry about the ethics of posthumous releases, memorial projects, and the balance between celebrating a deceased artist’s work and respecting the grieving process of loved ones.

As conversations continue, many industry stakeholders have called for greater sensitivity in handling projects involving deceased entertainers, while emphasizing the importance of preserving their legacies for future generations.
