Nigerian gospel artiste Esther Igbekele is mourning the death of her mother, Mary Amope Igbekele (JP).
Esther announced her mother’s passing in an emotional post on Instagram on Friday, August 14, 2026, expressing her grief over the loss.
“AND MY MOTHER DIED. Death, you took my GOLD away,” the singer wrote.
The announcement has since attracted an outpouring of condolences from fans, colleagues and well-wishers, who have sympathised with the singer and her family.
Mary Amope Igbekele was recently celebrated by the family when she marked her 70th birthday and wedding anniversary in 2025. Reports indicate that she was 71 at the time of her death.
Esther, popularly known as the Duchess of Gospel Music, has been active in the Nigerian gospel music scene for several years. She began her music career in 1996 and has performed at gospel events in Nigeria and abroad.
The singer has not disclosed the cause of her mother’s death, while details of the funeral arrangements have also yet to be announced.
As tributes continue to pour in, fans and members of the gospel community have expressed support for Esther during the period of mourning.
