Governors earn N648,561 in listed monthly pay, RMAFC reveals

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has listed a Nigerian state governor’s monthly basic salary, hardship allowance and constituency allowance at a combined N648,560.62, excluding several other benefits provided to the office holder.

The figures, contained in a remuneration schedule attributed to RMAFC, show that the governor’s monthly basic salary is N185,308.75, while the hardship allowance is N92,654.37 and the constituency allowance is N370,617.50.

Together, the three components amount to N648,560.62 per month.

The schedule also places the monthly basic salary of a deputy governor at N176,017.91, with a hardship allowance of N88,008.95 and a constituency allowance of N352,035.83. The three components total N616,062.69 monthly.

RMAFC is constitutionally responsible, among other functions, for determining the remuneration appropriate for political, public and judicial office holders in Nigeria. The commission maintains that its remuneration packages should be distinguished from claims about additional benefits that may be provided under applicable laws or by government.

The remuneration schedule lists several other benefits available to governors, but does not assign monetary values to them in the figures under review.

They include motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance, personal and special assistants, domestic staff, entertainment, utilities, security and newspapers or periodicals.

Other listed provisions include accommodation, furniture, medical services, duty tour allowance and estacode.

Because several of these benefits are provided in kind or are not monetised in the schedule, the N648,560.62 figure should not be interpreted as the governor’s complete financial package.

A previous report based on an RMAFC remuneration document similarly noted that many benefits for governors were not monetised, with the state instead providing services and facilities such as vehicles, accommodation, domestic staff, security, medical care and utilities.

RMAFC has also previously clarified that political office holders receive different categories of regular and non-regular allowances, with some benefits paid periodically rather than monthly.

The latest figures therefore represent the specified salary and allowances in the remuneration schedule, rather than a comprehensive valuation of all benefits attached to the offices of governor and deputy governor.

It is also worth noting that figures circulating online should be read in the context of the particular RMAFC remuneration schedule from which they were obtained. The commission’s official website remains the appropriate source for the applicable remuneration framework and any subsequent revisions.
