HBO’s fantasy drama House of the Dragon is set to return for its highly anticipated third season on June 21, 2026, continuing the story of the Targaryen civil war that has captivated audiences worldwide. The series stars Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen.
The HBO drama, a prequel to the acclaimed television series Game of Thrones, is based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood and is set nearly 200 years before the events of the original show. Season three will consist of eight episodes and is expected to pick up immediately after the dramatic conclusion of season two.
According to HBO, the new season will premiere on June 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will be available to stream on HBO Max, with new episodes released weekly through August 9.
The upcoming installment is expected to focus on the escalating conflict known as the “Dance of the Dragons,” the brutal civil war within House Targaryen. Showrunner Ryan Condal has teased a season filled with large-scale battles, political intrigue and significant turning points in the struggle for the Iron Throne. One of the most anticipated storylines is the Battle of the Gullet, a major naval confrontation that was postponed from the previous season.
In addition to D’Arcy and Smith, several returning cast members are expected to reprise their roles, including Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Tom Glynn-Carney and Ewan Mitchell.
HBO renewed House of the Dragon for a third season in 2024 and later confirmed a fourth season, which is expected to conclude the series.
With war now fully underway in Westeros, season three is expected to deliver some of the franchise’s most ambitious action sequences and dramatic character confrontations to date.
