Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has alleged that at least $9 billion worth of gold is being illegally taken out of Nigeria annually.

Falana made the allegation in a statement on Friday, August 18, 2023. He said that the illegal export of gold is being carried out through private jets.

“This is a huge loss to the Nigerian economy,” Falana said. “The government must take steps to stop this illegal activity.”

Falana said that the illegal export of gold is being facilitated by corrupt officials at the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development. He called on the government to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Falana also called on the government to put in place measures to regulate the mining industry and ensure that gold is exported legally.

The illegal export of gold is a major problem in Nigeria. It is estimated that the country loses billions of dollars in revenue each year due to this illegal activity. The government must take steps to stop this illegal activity and protect the country’s natural resources.

In addition to the economic losses, the illegal export of gold also has a negative impact on the environment. Mining operations often pollute the environment and destroy forests. The government must also take steps to protect the environment from the harmful effects of mining.
