The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified 385 flashpoints and 200 difficult terrains across Osun State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, as preparations intensify to ensure a peaceful, credible and well-organised poll.
The electoral commission disclosed that the identified flashpoints and hard-to-reach locations have been mapped as part of its comprehensive election risk assessment, with the findings already shared with relevant security agencies to facilitate effective planning and deployment.
According to INEC, the flashpoints are areas considered vulnerable to electoral violence, political tensions or security threats, while the difficult terrains comprise remote or geographically challenging communities that may pose logistical obstacles to the timely distribution of election materials and the movement of electoral personnel.
The commission said the assessment forms part of its proactive measures to minimise potential disruptions and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
INEC assured political parties, candidates and voters that it is working closely with security agencies, election stakeholders and community leaders to address identified risks before election day.
The commission noted that security agencies have been adequately briefed on the locations requiring special attention and are expected to develop operational strategies to ensure the safety of voters, election officials and sensitive electoral materials.
In addition to security planning, INEC said it is making logistical arrangements to ensure that difficult terrains do not prevent eligible voters from participating in the election. The commission disclosed that measures are being put in place to facilitate the timely deployment of personnel and election materials to remote communities.
INEC also appealed to political parties and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and refrain from acts capable of undermining the credibility of the election. It urged candidates to respect the provisions of the Electoral Act and abide by the Peace Accord aimed at promoting issue-based campaigns and preventing violence.
The commission further called on residents of Osun State to cooperate with electoral officials and security personnel, stressing that peaceful conduct by all stakeholders is essential for the successful conduct of the governorship election.
Election observers have noted that early identification of security flashpoints and logistical challenges is a critical component of election preparedness, as it enables authorities to deploy resources more effectively and reduce the risk of disruptions on polling day.
With preparations entering the final stages, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a free, fair and credible governorship election, expressing confidence that the collaboration between the commission, security agencies and other stakeholders will help ensure a peaceful electoral process across Osun State.
