Peter Obi defends lawsuit against Kenneth Okonkwo, says ‘I want him to expose me in court’

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended his decision to institute legal proceedings against former ally and actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, insisting that the lawsuit is necessary to allow allegations made against him to be tested in court.

Obi, who spoke amid growing public discussion surrounding his fallout with Okonkwo, stated that he welcomed the opportunity for the former Labour Party chieftain to present any evidence supporting his claims before a competent court of law.

According to Obi, the legal action is not intended to silence criticism but to ensure accountability and establish the truth regarding allegations that have been circulated in the public domain.

“I want him to expose me in court,” Obi reportedly said while responding to questions about the suit, emphasizing that judicial proceedings provide the appropriate platform for resolving disputes involving serious accusations.

The development marks a further escalation in the deteriorating relationship between the two men, who worked closely during the 2023 presidential campaign under the Labour Party banner.

Okonkwo was one of Obi’s prominent supporters during the electioneering period and frequently defended the former Anambra State governor in media engagements. However, their relationship later soured following disagreements over the direction of the party and issues relating to opposition politics in Nigeria.

In recent months, Okonkwo has publicly criticized Obi, making a series of allegations and comments that have attracted significant attention among supporters and political observers.

The exact nature of the claims at the center of the legal dispute has become a subject of public debate, with supporters of both men offering differing interpretations of the controversy.

Obi maintained that anyone making allegations against a public figure should be prepared to substantiate such claims through lawful channels.

Political analysts note that by taking the matter to court, Obi appears determined to challenge the allegations through legal means rather than engaging in a prolonged exchange in the media.

The former governor stressed the importance of due process and the rule of law, arguing that court proceedings would provide an impartial environment where facts can be examined and verified.

Observers say the lawsuit could draw considerable public attention given the political prominence of both individuals and their shared history within the Labour Party movement.

The dispute has generated mixed reactions among party supporters and political commentators. While some believe the court process will help clarify issues surrounding the allegations, others have expressed concern that the public disagreement could further deepen divisions within opposition circles.

Supporters of Obi have largely defended his decision to seek legal redress, arguing that public allegations should be supported by evidence. On the other hand, some supporters of Okonkwo maintain that he is entitled to express his views and criticisms regarding political developments.

Analysts believe the legal battle could have implications beyond the personal dispute between the two men, particularly as opposition parties continue to reposition ahead of future political contests.

The case is expected to provide a legal examination of the allegations and counterclaims that have emerged from the fallout, with both parties likely to present their positions before the court.

As proceedings unfold, political observers will be watching closely to see whether the matter results in further revelations or contributes to ongoing conversations about accountability, transparency, and internal dynamics within Nigeria’s opposition political landscape.

For now, Obi has remained firm in his stance, insisting that the courtroom remains the appropriate venue for determining the validity of any accusations made against him and challenging Okonkwo to substantiate his claims through the judicial process.
