Former Celtic FC striker Chris Sutton has backed Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho to play a decisive role in the club’s push for the Scottish Premiership title.
Sutton’s comments come as Celtic approach the final stretch of the 2025–26 season, with the striker’s role under scrutiny despite a recent upturn in form. Iheanacho was left on the bench in the team’s 3-1 league win over Falkirk, days after scoring twice in a Scottish Cup semi-final victory over St. Mirren.
The former Celtic forward suggested that while Iheanacho may not match the pressing intensity of teammate Daizen Maeda, he offers a different tactical option.
According to Sutton, Iheanacho’s strength lies in his ability to retain possession, link play, and provide a more composed attacking presence qualities he believes could prove crucial against defensively organized opponents.
Iheanacho’s first season at Celtic has been marked by inconsistency, largely due to injury setbacks. After an encouraging start following his arrival from Sevilla FC, the 29-year-old was sidelined for an extended period with a hamstring problem.
He has since returned to fitness and shown signs of improvement, scoring three goals in his last four appearances across competitions, including a key strike in European action.
Manager Martin O’Neill now faces a selection decision as Celtic balance tactical demands in the closing stages of the campaign. While Maeda remains a preferred option for high-intensity matches, Iheanacho is pushing for a more prominent role.
Sutton noted that the forward’s current form and motivation could be vital, particularly with his contract situation yet to be resolved.
With only a handful of matches remaining, Celtic’s title ambitions may hinge on finding the right attacking balance, with Iheanacho’s creativity and finishing seen as potential game-changers in the run-in.
