Real Madrid have officially confirmed the signing of Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial €55 million, marking a major early statement of intent ahead of the 2026/27 season.
In a statement released on Monday, June 15, 2026, the Spanish giants announced that the 27-year-old has signed a long-term contract at the Santiago Bernabéu running until June 30, 2032. The deal reportedly includes performance-related add-ons that could raise the total fee by a further €5 million.
While financial details were not fully disclosed by either club, sources close to the negotiations say the agreement represents a significant investment as Real Madrid begin a squad rebuild under newly reappointed manager José Mourinho.
The move is widely viewed as Mourinho’s first major signing since returning to the club, with the Portuguese coach expected to reshape Madrid’s defensive structure following two trophyless seasons that included a Champions League quarter-final exit and a missed domestic title challenge.

Cucurella is expected to strengthen the left side of Madrid’s defence, with the club identifying that area as a key tactical weakness. His energetic style, ability to invert into midfield, and attacking support from deep were reportedly central to Mourinho’s decision to push for his signing.
For Chelsea, the transfer brings an end to a mixed spell for Cucurella at Stamford Bridge. Signed from Brighton in 2022 for around £56 million, the defender endured an inconsistent start in England but later became a more regular feature under successive managers, contributing to cup success in Europe and global competition.
The London club is understood to view the sale as a financially strategic decision amid ongoing squad restructuring and pressure to balance long-term spending.
Despite the completion of the transfer, Cucurella remains on international duty with Spain at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ in North America. He is expected to join Real Madrid for pre-season preparations after the conclusion of the tournament.
Real Madrid say an official unveiling at the Santiago Bernabéu will take place once his World Cup commitments are completed.
