The Abia State Police Command has arrested a woman identified as Nwoko Gift for allegedly assaulting her 12-year-old niece with a knife in a case that has raised concerns about child abuse and domestic violence.
According to the police, the suspect was taken into custody following reports that she attacked the minor during a domestic altercation. The incident reportedly left the 12-year-old with injuries, prompting the intervention of law enforcement authorities.
Police spokesperson for the Abia State Command said officers responded swiftly after receiving information about the alleged assault, leading to the arrest of the suspect and the commencement of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The injured child was reportedly taken to a medical facility, where she is receiving treatment. Authorities have not disclosed the extent of her injuries but assured that her welfare remains a priority as investigations continue.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victim and the suspect are close relatives, although police have yet to establish the events that led to the alleged attack.
The command condemned all forms of violence against children, stressing that acts of abuse within the home are criminal offences that will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted where sufficient evidence exists.
Police also urged parents, guardians, and members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse, domestic violence, and neglect promptly, emphasizing that early intervention can help protect vulnerable children from harm.
Child rights advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of laws protecting minors, noting that children should be raised in environments that are safe, nurturing, and free from violence.
The arrest comes amid renewed calls for greater public awareness of child protection laws and the responsibilities of caregivers to safeguard the physical and emotional well-being of children under their care.
The Abia State Police Command said the investigation is ongoing and assured the public that the suspect will be charged in accordance with the law if the allegations are substantiated.
