President Bola Tinubu has reportedly approved the appointment of former Zamfara State Governor and serving senator, Abdulaziz Yari, as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
Yari’s appointment was reported on Saturday by Western Post, which also said Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, had been named secretary of the campaign council.
The reported development comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections and the commencement of the official campaign season.
However, as of the time of writing, the report could not be independently corroborated through an official statement from the Presidency or the APC. Earlier reports had indicated that Yari, Uzodimma and other senior APC figures were being considered for key positions in Tinubu’s campaign structure.
A report by “Peoples Daily” on August 9 said Yari, Uzodimma, former Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike were among those being considered for the position of campaign Director-General.
Yari had emerged as one of the leading contenders for the position following months of lobbying by groups supporting his candidacy. In April, a coalition under the Senator Yari Support Network for Tinubu 2027 called on Tinubu to appoint the former Zamfara governor as campaign DG.
Yari has also been actively involved in efforts to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election bid. In March, he launched the Renewed Hope Network, a political movement aimed at building grassroots support for the President across the country ahead of the 2027 election.
The former governor is currently the senator representing Zamfara West and secured the APC ticket to contest the senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.
Tinubu was endorsed by the APC as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election in May, with the Presidency subsequently announcing that he would receive the party’s certificate and flag as its standard-bearer.
If confirmed officially, the appointment of Yari would place a prominent northern political figure at the centre of the APC’s campaign machinery as the ruling party seeks to secure Tinubu’s re-election.
The reported choice also reflects the importance being attached to grassroots mobilisation, political coordination and regional outreach as the 2027 contest draws closer.
